Canoeing safaris have been operating for over 27 years along the Lower Zambezi River. They have attracted many adventure seekers wishing to undergo a unique canoeing experience combined with wildlife viewing at its best. River Horse Safaris was established in 1994 and is run by its owner, Anthony Elton, who used his many previous years of experience when setting it up. It specializes mainly in canoeing safaris, but also offers options of more traditional land based activities within the local National Parks bounding this water course. Canoeing offers a superb, quiet way of approaching wildlife. The trips are led by professional guides through the national parks that flank this remarkable river system. These are the Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia and the Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe, the latter of which is a World Heritage Site. A wide variety of canoe trips are run on either side of the Lower Zambezi, in Zambia or Zimbabwe, in order to meet clients’ canoeing requirements, areas of preference, budgets and individual interests. The longest trip is 10 days which covers the entire 230km stretch of river between Kariba and the Zimbabwean/Mozambique border. At the other end of the scale the shortest safari is only 3 days and can serve as an introduction into the middle floodplain area, where the highest game populations exist. In this part of the river system there is a chance to explore the many smaller channels off the main body of water where the more secretive bird species may be found. In addition to our traditional semi participatory canoeing adventures, we also offer multi activity/special interest trips, in Zambia as well as those which add more comfort using tented and serviced bush camps, or a combination of any of these
